The two guys sitting down dont look to happy !! The one on the left is Tich Turner.

  2. David says:

The person on the left with the saxophone around his neck is, I think, Wesley Magooglin who went on to play with ‘Beat’ 1978-83, Billy Ocean and Hazel O’Connor ?

Is he the same guy who put on an exhibition of anarchist art with Stuart Christie at another Hastings pub, the Dragon Bar in George Street in May this year ??

I asked around and Wesley Magoogan said

“This picture was taken at ‘The Box’ a rehearsal studio in Silverhill behind the Leisure music shop around 1977.At the rear right is a young Roger Hubbard with Andy Knight on Drums, Martin Baker on Bass, little Stevie on guitar, Tich Turner and Martin Stringer on vocs. We used to play all the pubs in the Old Town from “the Kings Head’ to ‘The Cutter’ and we were a great R&B band that got our first break with Ray Fenwick from Ian Gillan band who said we were all lazy [@*} and that made a few of us work very hard also Tony Powell who was with Rod Stewart’s label Riva Records and the late great Phil Cordell.”

At the age of 14 I was actually too young to get into the The Cutter,so with the rest of my embryonic band, we used to watch ‘Steppin Out’ through the window at the front.
I always remember being very envious of the guitarists silver ‘Burns Flyde’ guitar.
Also about this time I got into my first proper gig at the Carlisle, John Martyn doing a warm up before a major tour.
Does anyone know what date this was?
As for memories of ‘The Box’ I’ll always remember Huggy trying to run up a partition wall and going through it! Sorry John.

O yeah, one other thing. Wesley confirms that it was him who was involved with the Anarchist Art Exhibition at the Dragon.
